Frequently asked questions

What is orthognathic surgery and what is it for?

Orthognathic surgery is a skeletal correction procedure that repositions the upper and lower jaw when there is a bone misalignment that cannot be solved with orthodontics alone. This procedure restores facial harmony, improves chewing function and achieves a stable bite, creating a complete balance between appearance and function.

Orthognathic surgery is recommended when orthodontic treatment alone cannot achieve a stable bite. With this procedure we can correct cases such as a receding lower jaw (retrognathia), an overdeveloped lower jaw (prognathism), an open bite or jaw asymmetry, rebalancing the lower third of the face to achieve both functional and aesthetic balance.

Treatment is planned in detail before the operation: first, braces are fitted to align the teeth and prepare the dental arch; then comes the surgery itself; and finally a period of orthodontic refinement to ensure a perfect bite. This combination of orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery achieves optimal, personalised results.
Recovery after orthognathic surgery is usually easier than many patients expect: a short hospital stay is common and there are no visible scars, as the incisions are made inside the mouth. A soft diet is usual for the first few weeks and swelling gradually goes down, allowing you to return to normal activities within a reasonable time.

As well as improving facial harmony and the shape of the chin or jaw, orthognathic surgery offers very important functional benefits: it improves chewing, corrects the dental bite, can relieve related breathing disorders (such as OSA) and combines appearance and health in a single treatment. With it, the improvement is global: functional, structural and aesthetic.
